Lush Life Electronica
A Global Journey Into Soulful Electronica
A rich atmospheric collection highlighting the finest melodic, groove-based electronic from around the globe. From the classic subtle melodies of John Beltran and Detroit-flavored techno-esque sounds of Sunrise Society and early Stasis-produced Phenomyna, the journey touches on epic soundtrack styled work from London based CIM, Soul Circuit (composed exclusively for Lush Life) and the inspirational rework of Scottish outfit Pub by Berlin's finest, Arovane. From there Blueshift and Shad T. Scott deliver two sublime minimal rhythm-based grooves while Move D and Bochum Welt respectively complete the picture with two emotionally fuelled ambient cuts. A lush life indeed...
John Beltran
John Beltran established himself as one of the UK's pioneers of atmospheric ambient techno with early releases on Carl Craig's Retroactive label, Dego's Deeper Shade of Techno compilation, and Quango's Dimensions in Ambience 2. His acclaimed Ten Days of Blue album on Peacefrog took mellow, melodic textures and rhythmic experimentalism to new heights. Beltram also recently released an EP of midtempo grooves as a part of the Exceptional label's Sky series. He has been featured on various compilations, from LTJ Bukem's Earth 4 to Nick Warren's Back to Mine.
CIM
CIM is Simon Walley from London. His Service Pack release on Delsin Records was a big success, had to be re-pressed several times, and was praised by Mixmaster Morris and Andrew Weatherall among others. The release also caught the attention of Clair (ex-Clear co-runner), resulting in several releases for her new deFocus label, which include last summer's Reference album.
Soul Circuit
Soul Circuit is Adrian Corker and Paul Conboy, who also record under the digital alter ego APE for Tim Simenon's Electric Tones label. Soul Circuit released one album, Don't Spoil the Tension, on the Sirkus label in 2000, which provided the soundtrack to a film made by Richard Mulhearn (artwork photographer for Twisted Nerve, Badly Drawn Boy, Doves). The film and music was part of an installation held in a gallery in London's East End last year. A DVD of the project along with a 12-inch containing remixes by Susuma Yakata and Ian O'Brien will be released in September 2001. For Lush Life Electronica, they have contributed a new composition written expressly for this album.
Bochum Welt
Bochum Welt is the alter ego of Gianluigi Di Costanzo, a composer, sound designer and web developer based in Milan. He directs the Italian base of legendary producer Thomas Dolby's Beatnik Inc.; a technology company focused on interactivity and virtual reality. Bochum Welt has released several records on the Rephlex label, including Desktop Robotics and Feelings on a Screen. He has collaborated with Aphex Twin, Bluvertigo, Games Workshop and others. Gianlugi started collecting rare computers, palmtops, electronics and analogue synthesizers back when he was 14. He never stopped.
Shad T. Scott
Shad T. Scott is one of the originators of Miami's electronic music scene. His breakthrough Sand Pail EP 12-inch on Isophlux records was mixed on a home stereo in 1994 and combined hard electro with hip-hop and ambient moods. Shad's other projects include the experimental Miami bass outfit Gosub.
Move D
Move D is the moniker of David Moufang. David grew up in Heidelberg, listening to his parents' psychedelic rock collection and cultivating an obsession with outer space, the result of a trip to the cinema with his father to see 2001: A Space Odyssey. His music combines these early influences with the musicianship he's honed as a jazz and classical player and a passion for minimalist Detroit techno. The result is a mixture that is as jazzy and laid-back as it is compelling. Move D's debut album, Kunststoff (Compost, 1995), is hailed as one of the most remarkable electronic albums to come out of Europe, combining dreamy sound-scapes with Detroit's pulsating hard electro. Move D has released music on Warp, Compost, and his own Source label. His other projects include Deep Space Network with Jonas Grossman, and Conjoint.
Sunrise Society
Sunrise Society signed to Pacific Records in 1994. Andy Smith and Simon Donohue released seven tracks through the label, culminating in 1997. Remixed by Stacey Pullen, Claude Young, Mike Dunn and Fretless AZM, they formed a major part of the sound the label was at the forefront of at the time. Simon has also worked with Blame from LTJ Bukem's Good Looking label and also released acclaimed tracks as Native Force on the Zozan label that were picked up for license on Compost Records.
Blueshift
Blueshift, aka Steve Barnes, who currently resides in Cologne, has
previously recorded under the guise of Process for labels such as Fat Cat and Traum from Cologne, while also submitting exclusive material on the second Scape compilation for Stefan Betke, aka Pole.
Pub
Pub is a key member of the ultra low key Glasgow based electronic collective Ampoule and has recorded under a variety of project names such as Lucky And Easy and Moped Endo and for labels such as Delsin as well as Vertical Form. His Summer project was one of the most inspiring and lauded pieces of electronica produced of the summer months of 2000. From the five remixes of the original, Arovane's (Din, Morr Music, CCO & Vertical Form) "AMX 1" was the most heavily praised and is currently the most sought after.
