A little history on the L.A.Weekly Detour Festival:
This time two years ago Los Angeles – one of the world’s great music capitals – lacked its own major festival. Sure, there were some multi-act, multi-stage events in the area, but they tended to be genre-specific and often miles out of town. So LA Weekly, the alternative voice of this city for nearly 30 years, and era-defining event producers Goldenvoice (who bring us Coachella etc.) teamed to create Detour: a vibrant coming-together of diverse international rock and dance acts right in the heart of downtown L.A.

Appropriately, Detour’s 2006 debut was co-headlined by Beck – an artist who encapsulates L.A.’s vast, eclectic soundscape like few others – and fellow SoCal locals Queens of the Stone Age, as well as hyperactive UK techno duo Basement Jaxx. Angelinos voted with their feet: Detour was a hit, and returned bigger and better last year with French dance maestros Justice and Brit indie-nistas Bloc Party topping the bill. Other Detour alumni include local luminaries Autolux, Redd Kross and Nico Vega; hip-hop innovators Blackalicious and Cool Kids; coarse Norse nutters Turbonegro; multi-lingual cult trio Blonde Redhead; and an array of globetrotting DJs.

This year Detour will feature over 25 acts on 4 outdoor stages, plus vendors and art installations, spread across 6 city blocks around City Hall. Confirmed bands include genre-bending proggies The Mars Volta and irrepressible Gypsy-punk collective Gogol Bordello. Take the Metro (there’s a stop just steps away); stroll the streets, drink-in-hand; and celebrate our own world-class music festival.
